The truth about a career in photography: by Eliot Cohen

The truth about a career in photography:
• It’s not nearly as glamourous as people think
• You won’t get to travel the world, or even your country most likely, being paid to swan about shooting.
• You won’t meet lingerie models/film stars
• If you do meet lingerie models/film stars, they’ll be so bored with people like you, that they’ll barely register your presence, and disappear as soon as the shutter closes for the last frame, never to be seen again.
• You *will* compromise your “artistic vision”
• Everyone will try and get you to do “a deal”. In plain language that ends up as “You shoot for us for almost nothing, we’ll give you little in return”
• Sometimes, it is actually advantageous to take silly “deals” like that, but read the fineprint!
• Some of your best work published will be unshowable, because some designer at a mag somewhere has cropped the shot/s unthinkingly to fit them on the page/s
• The first question women ask you on learning you’re a photographer: “Do you shoot weddings?”
• The first question men ask you on learning you’re a photographer: “Do you shoot porn?”
• You don’t get paid nearly as much as people think
• It’s still incredibly expensive to be a photographer, even without paying for film and processing.
• It’s an incredibly rewarding profession, and even occasionally monetarily.
